Lithium-Ion Batteries Earns Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 3 Scientists : Laptops, Desktops, Tablets and Smartphones

The Nobel Prize Committee announced that the Lithium-Ion batteries developed through the work of 3 scientists namely John B. Goodenough, M. Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino were recently recognized for technology and research that has “laid the foundation of a wireless, fossil fuel-free society.”

The scientists were awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for their development of lithium-ion batteries that are being used for laptops, tablets, smartphones and other gadgets.

This new technology on batteries have revolutionized portable electronics and are very likely powering a device that you have recently purchased or owned these batteries have also helped in the rise of electric cars that can be driven on long trips, while there are also miniaturized versions being used in many lifesaving medical devices and accessories like cardiac defibrillators.



John B. Goodenough, M. Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino will share the prize money worth about $900,000.

According to American Chemical Society this “Lithium-ion batteries are a great example of how chemistry can transform people’s lives.” They also stated their appreciation upon seeing this work recognized by the Nobel Prize.

The three researchers’ work in the 1970s and ’80s led to the creation of powerful, lightweight and rechargeable batteries used in nearly every smartphone or laptop computer, and in billions of cameras and power tools. Astronauts on the International Space Station rely on them, and engineers working on renewable energy grids often turn to them. By storing electricity generated when sunlight and wind are at their peak, lithium-ion batteries can reduce dependence on fossil fuel energy sources and help lessen the impact of climate change.

M. Stanley Whittingham, 77, is a professor at Binghamton University, State University of New York. He mention that he always hoped lithium-ion technology would grow, “but we never imagined it to grow this far and fast even in android phones and Apple iPhones.

John B. Goodenough, 97, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin became the oldest Nobel Prize winner, yet he is still active in research and technology field.

Akira Yoshino, 71, an honorary fellow for the Asahi Kasei Corporation in Tokyo and a professor at Meijo University in Nagoya, Japan then shared that after the announcement he was quite pleased that the technology could also help fight climate change, calling their work on lithium-ion batteries “suitable for a sustainable society.”

The first rechargeable battery came about in 1859. These were made from lead-acid, and are still used to start gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles today. But lead-acid batteries were bulky and heavy. Nickel-cadmium batteries, which were less efficient but more compact, were invented in 1899.

“The big advantage of this technology was that lithium-ion stored about 10 times as much energy as lead-acid or 5 times as much as nickel-cadmium,” Dr. Whittingham said. Lithium-ion batteries were also extremely lightweight and required little maintenance. “So there was a huge incentive to move to lithium-ion.”

Unfortunately, Dr. Whittingham’s new battery had a problem. When it was repeatedly charged, thin strands of metallic lithium would grow out from the negative electrode. Sometimes, the strands would grow long enough that they reached the cathode and short-circuited the battery, and could cause an explosion.

Dr. Goodenough, then at Oxford, predicted that lithium-ion batteries would have greater potential if the cathode were made with a different material. He noticed that cobalt oxide was similar in structure to titanium disulfide. It could tolerate lithium being pushed into it and pulled out over and over. It also made the lithium-ion battery almost twice as powerful as Dr. Whittingham’s. The battery now generated four volts.



Building from Dr. Goodenough’s work, Dr. Yoshino, who was at the Asahi Kasei Corporation in Japan, then showed that more complicated carbon-based electrodes could house lithium-ions in between their layers too. This eliminated pure lithium from the battery entirely. Instead, the system used only lithium-ions, which are safer.

These developments ultimately led to commercialization of the lithium-ion battery in 1991 by another Japanese electronics giant, Sony Corporation. The compact nature and reliability of lithium-ion batteries made the technology a staple in electronics that had once been powered primarily by disposable batteries that consumers always seemed to run out of at the wrong time. That included radios, hand-held gaming devices, laptop computers and eventually smartphones and wearable computers.

But the technology has its flaws, too.

There is a limited number of times that a lithium-ion battery can be replenished before it deteriorates and can no longer hold a charge. In addition, a faultily designed lithium-ion battery can turn into a miniature bomb.

Some of the biggest tech product recalls have involved battery defects. In 2006, Dell recalled 4.1 million laptop batteries because they could erupt in flames. More recently, Samsung Electronics recalled and discontinued the Galaxy Note 7, its flagship smartphone, after several reports of the device exploding.

Technologists often point to lithium-ion as an innovation roadblock: While computer chips have doubled in speed every few years and digital displays have become significantly brighter and sharper, tech companies have made only incremental improvements on batteries; there’s not much that engineers can do beyond making the batteries bigger and implementing software algorithms to make hardware more power efficient.

Despite the hiccups, companies continue to rely on the batteries because they can be cheaply and reliably reproduced. They have also been scaled up for use in larger settings.

Energy storage, most often using lithium-ion battery technology, is widely seen as necessary for transforming the electric grid to a carbon-free system and combating the effects of climate change. Most electricity in the United States — and in many other parts of the world — comes from fossil fuel sources, predominantly natural gas but also coal.

Battery technology helps replace those carbon-emitting sources because it allows power companies to store excess solar and wind power when the sun does not shine nor the wind blow — the weakness of those carbon-free sources.

The most critical area for the electric grid has been providing power when people return home from work during the summer and turn on their air-conditioners, cook dinner and wash clothes, when utilities often rely on natural gas plants designed to meet those periods of high demand, known as peaking plants, which typically are more expensive.

“What’s exciting about lithium-ion technology is it has the power to unlock the sun 24-7 to really help renewable energy power our future in a way that we haven’t been able to capture until now,” said Bernadette Del Chiaro, executive director of the California Solar and Storage Association, an industry group.

The potential of battery technology is highlighted in Northern California, where Pacific Gas & Electric is shutting off power to hundreds of thousands of customers on Wednesday because of the risk of wildfires.

Some of their neighbors who have combined solar and battery systems can continue to meet their energy needs.

“From a high level, lithium-ion batteries have increased reliability, they’ve enabled greater renewable penetration, they’ve reduced the reliance on centralized power,” said Ed Fenster, co-founder and executive chairman of Sunrun, one of the largest residential solar companies in the United States. “They’re going to do to the electric grid what the P.C. did to the mainframe computer.”

But while the batteries can be a part of the solution for reducing fossil fuel use, they have also resulted in other problems around lithium extraction and waste.

More than half of lithium is gathered using brine extraction from deep inside the earth, especially in South America, and the rest is still mined traditionally from rock. Both methods have caused environmental damage to areas around lithium processing operations. And as the demand for lithium increases, companies may resort to using energy-intensive heating to speed up brine evaporation. Some lithium sources could also be overextracted.

Once lithium-ion batteries are used up in electronics, they are often disposed of improperly by consumers. Less than 5 percent of lithium-ion batteries are collected and recycled in the United States, according to the Department of Energy.

“If you think about the batteries in cellphones, most of them are thrown away and end up in landfills,” said Alexej Jerschow, a chemist at New York University.

While some companies that make smartphones and other devices have attempted to improve their recycling records, dismantling the batteries and removing the metal for reuse involves another high-temperature melting and extraction process. “It is just not economical,” Dr. Jerschow said.

Scientists have experimented with new power technologies that use alternate methods to replenish batteries, like pulling energy from the air or through radio signals. But any potential successor to lithium-ion would have to undergo rigorous safety tests before being introduced to the public.

    Reading this makes me study harder knowing there is someone at age 97 that is still capable of innovating something. I have use many batteries before rechargable or not i have use them many time but i have never thought that fossil fuel are needed to produce battery and that most of the batteries end up in landfill.
    The good thing is that they have invented or innovate the battery using lithium ion surely this will help our planet a lot and the scientists are well deserved to win the nobel prize

    I've already know about the Lithium ion or commonly called as Li-ion because most of my gadgets and appliances uses this type of battery but I was surprised because this development was created on early 1970’s to 80’s. All I know was this Li-ion type of batteries was created on late 20’s because of the Samsung issue about exploding or flaming phones while charging which I’ve already experienced. I was also informed and learned about how Li-ion batteries change the world of appliances because before, they uses lead-acid which is big and heavy and cadmium batteries which is small but less efficient.

I think the three scientists really sealed that noble prize not just prize but also gratitude for giving us another inventions that makes our lives way easier they invented a lithium ion battery it's a novel battery that is compatible and suitable with every use amd it's also environmental friendly because it's fossil fuel free.it said that it is a battery the one that empowers our phone amd laptops and it's pretty obvious..it's lightweight and easy to carry on.and when the percentage is about to drop...im so glad that the battery is rechargable not like other that you have to buy and replace a new onw when it's dead.But among all those good things that i've mention and although the lithium ion battery might seem great enough it still have flaws like when it overcharges the thin strand of methallic lithium will grow and turn out to an explosion like the other batteries but too much is not good anyway.According to Dr. Goodenough it would be greater if the cathode was made from different material.A several years passed by the batteries went though an evolution from lead -acid to lithium,from lower to higher material being made,it shows that chemistry is important to us regarding on the way we develop.

    While batteries have been a crucial yet undermined industry in the field of technology, we get new discoveries for these things once every few decades. With the lithium-ion battery being a staple and a common phrase that you hear among smartphones and gadgets alike, it was eye opening to actually read something that put more depth into that phrase rather than something just making your phone battery last longer than usual. It's amazing how advancements in technologies like these turn out to be very revolutionary in the beginning, which was the intention of the scientists that were involved in making the lithium-ion battery, but as time goes on and we use this advancement to it's fullest, we get to see the harmful side effects that comes with technological advancements such as these. Every month, almost every flagship store of mobile phones produces another unit of their gadget and fortunate people are always enthusiastic to purchase them. Admittedly, I'm always on the look finding out the latest and most convenient phone; and it just depends on the situation whether or not we can afford it. Thinking of it, where do older phones go after being used for years? I can't remember when I last handed the first phone I had and where was it. I guess just like all waste, it ended up in landfills which is sad. Never did I realize the risk of its battery to explode in time. With all other phones, we'll never know how it'll encounter thermal runway causing them to be destructive and that is a major problem.

The article that I had read focuses more about the invention made bye the 3 scientists namely John B. Goodenough, M. Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino. Their invention is a battery which is made of lithium-ion and fossil-fuel free, I've also learned from this article that these are the batteries used to mostly all of the gadgets that ww are using now, namely phones and laptops.   139. There is no doubt that Lithium-Ion batteries helped us through the days since it was created. It has so many advantages that brought us to a safer and faster kind of life-style. It also helped us by putting Lithium-Ion batteries in new inventions like electronic cars, revolutionized portable electronics, etc. They combat the effects of climate change, because these batteries can reduce dependence on fossil fuel energy resources. They also store excess solar and wind power, and has the power to unlock the sun 24-7. But despite all those advantages, Lithium-Ion batteries also have and still have problems especially in getting or in extraction of lithium. Still, the biggest advantage of this technology or battery is that Lithium-Ion stored more energy in any other kind of battery. I'm also amazed about how those 3 scientists didn't give up on their inventions while they were still in their universities. So first of all I would like to acknowledge and congratulate the people who received the noble prize they did an amazing job which helped people sort problems to John, Stanley, and Akira for doing an amazing job. But every good thing has a counter part yes the lithium ion battery ended a few problems but new problems arose because of the products. And yes it is highly used by the public but they should be reminded that the technology still has its flaws and that when used improperly it could lead to dangerous outcomes. I also found out that there are more complicated processes need to be followed in order for a new technology be approved and be introduced to the public. It changed the whole humankind since you can bring along with you your electronic gadget anywhere. But the disadvantage of lithium-ion batteries are they don't last for a while. So you still need to charge it. It affected the people and made the work easy since you don't need to have a power electric source. On the other hand, the lithium-ion batteries has an impact when it's their time to dispose or to not use. Lithium ion batteries can't hold no more the sufficient ions they need. That's why we need to change our lithium-ions when needed.

Lithium ion is a good combination for it brings electricity, power, and etc. According to the article, Lithium Ion is capable of storing energy 10 times than the lead acid and 5 times than nickel-cadmium.   166. As time goes by, I'm very grateful that there are people who has the ability to discover something. Being a scientist and an inventor is both an honor and a privelege because they will be able to make things that can help people in their daily lives. It is stated that lithium-ion batteries are identified as an alternative battery for the tehnology mostly used. I'm amazed to the inventors of these batteries because they worked hard for it and in spite of the long process and time they spared, it became successful. However, the lithium-ion batteries are not proven safe because it can cause explosion when it is charged repeatedly and as the demand of the lithium needed became higher, some sources will became over-eradicated that can be a root for unexpected calamity or damage in the environment. As a STEM student, I'm looking forward in the publication of this batteries because many people will benefit to it. I'm also hoping that future scientists can make and provide something and be discovered as a helpful matter in our society.   168. From what i read and analyzed of the nobel prize that the lithium -ion battery is a type of rechargable battery, and it's use for electric vehicles and portable electronics. In the batteries, lithium ions move from the negative electrode through an electrolyte to the positive electrode during discharge, and back when charging. Li-ion batteries use an intercalated lithium compound as the material at the positive electrode and typically graphite at the negative electrode. Research areas for lithium-ion batteries include life extension, energy density, safety, cost reduction, and charging speed.They can however be a safety hazard since they contain a flammable electrolyte, and if damaged or incorrectly charged can lead to explosions and fires.The batteries have a high energy density, no memory effect and low self-discharged. And that is my review from the LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES.

The lithium-ion batteries is more compact than the other kinds of batteried like lead-acid batteries which is a lot heavier and bigger, same as the Nickel-Cadmium batteries which are less efficient than the lead-acid batteries but more smaller. Those 3 scientists made a battery that is as near as the efficiency of a lead-acid and the compactness of a Nickel-Cadmium battery. I am inspired to invent something on my own when i grow up, and be awarded for my work. This will be my motivation and inspiration to continue my journey in learning and working hard as a student.

Lithium-Ion batteries, this technology is an important thing in making electronics but it has weaknesses too. There is a limited report that the Lithium-Ion batteries can turn into sa small bomb. Two huge companies recalled the defected batteries, Dell recollect the 4.1 million batteries of laptop that can possibly explode, Samsung also did the same thing and discontinue producing Galaxy Note 7 after reports that some of it explode.

    Companies continue to rely on these batteries because it is cheap and reliable. Having these batteries helps store the excess energy power that came from solar and wind. Batteries can help renewable energy power our future in a possible way. These can be alternative power for the people that been affected by calamities. But using these batteries need to be responsible, use it in good ways amd dispose it properly.

    Upon reading this article, I really think that the scientists, John B. Goodenough, M. Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino are amazing for developing such an eco-friendly, productive, innovative Lithium-Ion batteries that are lightweight and easy to use. A technology that could also help fight/prevent climate change. This lithium-ion technology has the power to unlock the sun 24-7 to really help renewable energy power our future in a way that we haven’t been able to capture until now which is very bewildering. This creation just proved how chemistry can transform people’s lives. Without chemistry, our lives by now would probably be in adversity. We’re probably facing a hard time.

Having read the article about the Chemistry Nobel Prize for Work on Lithium-Ion Batteries, I felt so amazed that there were scientists who really work to find solutions to our current problems. Problems that can be solved by an invention is worth giving a prize. Although sometimes, we think it can solve a problem, it can also bring opposing reactions to what we expect. But as human being we keep on searching. I believe that journey to finding solution in coming up with better source of energy can be improved through the innovation of other scientists. Improvement to one's work is really inevitable. It can only become successful in due recognition of the past studies and using them as a guide for a better one.But as time pass by, all inventions be it small or big should be duly given recognition especially if the intention is to improve and make our lives better. Better in as sense that the invention must not harm our environment, instead it should help all the living things be in harmony with nature.
    The invention about lithium-ion batteries although it can give a little bit of harm if not properly use, it can still serve good to all. Just bear in mind that all inventions have limitation and the said product is not exempted to it. All precautions must be given in consideration.

Litthium-ion batteries can help lessen the impact of climate change meaning that our worries for the climate change will lessen and er can think another solution for another crisis that were facing now. While the batteries can be a part of our solution for reducing fossil fuel use, they have also resulted in other problems around lithium extraction and waste. The lithium-ion has its flaws, too.
    There just a limited number of times that a lithium-ion battery can be replenished before it can no longer hold a charge. In another way ĺlithium-ion battery can turn into a miniature bomb.
